Cross Traffic: Art from Ali Curung, Ampilatwatja, Tennant Creek & Utopia

left

Via arterial routes and highways, from the Barkly Tablelands to the Sandover, art from Ali Curung, Ampilatwatja, Tennant Creek and Utopia is marked by striking experimentation. Independent artists from outstations, community hubs and health services diverge from established styles of neighbouring Western Desert art – syncretic creative expression being a hallmark.

This exhibition presents an intersection of early initiators of this history; some well-known, others by local memory and a niche of Aboriginal art scholars and collectors. Their works are exhibited alongside a new wave of multi-generational artists painting with the individuation and formal freedom that has become signature of the region.

Connected by geographical association and a keen perception of place, memory and myth, their irresistibly stylised sensibility distinguishes this art. Art which invokes the individuality of its makers, and the cultural traffic between communities and the arid plains and savannas that cross the Central and Northern Central Deserts.

Exhibition dates: 14 June – 3 August, 2025
Gallery hours: Wednesday – Sunday, 12 – 5pm.  Free admission.
