“Alkwarre” – Bush Banana
The community of Ampilatwatja made a conscious decision not to paint ‘altyerr’ dreaming stories. The artists paint their country where those stories sit.
“Alkwarre” are a favourite bush tucker in Ampilatwatja. Bush bananas are found on a winding vine that climbs up trees and shrubs. The flowers and young fruits are eaten raw and the older, mature fruit can be cooked lightly in the hot sand by the fire. The bush banana is often featured on artwork and in Aboriginal mythology.
Communicating bush foods through painting is an important way of teaching younger generations and maintaining a strong culture.
