Doris Elkedra was born out bush, she has no record of where. Her first memories of settlement are as a small girl living and going to school at Ali Curung. Her father was most likely a station hand at Elkedra station. It was common in those days for families to take the surname of the station owners.

Doris is a respected elder of the community and also a well known artist, having exhibited all over the world.

Doris’ inspiration comes from her hunting trips and when she sees the country, the different views and all the plants. Her paintings depict bush medicine plants, wild flowers and the plants that have fruits that she collects whilst hunting. Alyawarre county is abundant with a variety of seasonal bush foods and the artists express much of their rich knowledge through their paintings.
